Training & life update: August 17

This week was a bit of a struggle. I came down with a sore throat and it’s been lingering for more than a week. After almost six days of  symptoms, I finally bit the bullet and went to the doctor on Tuesday. I was told it was a viral infection and that antibiotics wouldn’t do anything for me. Thankfully, I was given an anti-inflammatory for my swollen throat and sent on my way. After taking the meds, I’m feeling better-ish, but frustratingly not 100 per cent.

With regards to running, this was Week 12 of my Hamilton Marathon training. Luckily, it was a rest week. It couldn’t have come at a better time!

Week 12

Actual – Off. Sick.

Tuesday: Planned – Active rest

Actual – Off. Sick. Went to doctors.

Wednesday: Planned – 12km easy

Actual – 12@5:35. I woke up feeling a bit better. Happy to be back out running. Paces a little too quick.

Thursday: Planned – 12km easy with 5x100m strides*

Actual – 12@5:33 – (1) 5:39 (2) 5:32 (3) 5:23(4) 5:34 (5) 5:30*(6) 5:40(7) 5:27 (8) 5:22* (9) 5:30* (10) 5:50 (11) 5:26* (12) 5:39

I was pleased with how this run went. Legs were feeling fresh and I was able to pick it up for 100m strides throughout. I ran my favourite route up across Parliament over to New Edinburgh. I could run this route in my sleep.

Friday: Planned – Rest.

Actual – 12@5:59 – (1) 6:16 (2) 6:12 (3) 5:58 (4) 5:59 (5) 6:02 (6) 6:04 (7) 5:42 (8) 5:49 (9) 5:51 (10) 6:07 (11) 5:44 (12) 5:47

I woke up feeling pretty good so I decided to complete Monday’s skipped run. Given that it was a planned rest day, I stuck to my easy paces.

Over the years, I’ve learned a lot regarding pacing on easy vs. hard days. This training cycle I’ve made a point of focusing more on this area. Run your easy runs EASY, so that you can hit your paces when it matters.
